Hello and welcome to my blog! I am a German expat who has been living in the UK since 1999. I live in London with my family and work as a teacher in a secondary school. As a family we are quite an international bunch, with a different passports for every family member – but that’s less to do with a strong sense for our different allegiances than with the fact that it is incredibly difficult to get an appointment at the German embassy here.
I have always enjoyed baking, especially the recipes from the south of Germany, where I am originally from. My ‘better half’, as they are called in German, is from Chile, and although I would love to boast with my Chilean food I’m afraid you will have to wait until my mother-in-law comes for a visit; if we’re lucky she’ll give us an empanada tutorial as she is the master of these delicious meat-filled pasties.
Living abroad is always a challenge, especially in terms of sourcing ingredients. Over the years I have been able to overcome the biggest obstacles, such as converting imperial measurements into proper metric ones and the like. I have even figured out the correct baking powder to self-raising flour ratio. Sometimes I feel like Shackleton: just me against the elements. But thanks to international trade and the expansion of Lidl and Aldi to the UK I can now get most ingredients without having to physically travel abroad.
Hopefully you enjoy my blog and it will encourage you to try some of the things at home!
Eure Ginger

Thank you for stopping by to comment, Gerlinde! California sounds such an amazing place – and you don’t have to put up with Winters, either 😉
Are you finding it hard to get German food or ingredients there? Or have you embraced the American way of life to the point that you don’t crave Spätzle or Currywurst any more?
